China Electronics Technology Group Corporation's Institute 9 for Acoustics, Optics, and Electronics

The China Electronics Technology Group Corporation’s Institute 9 (referred to as “Institute 9”), officially known externally as the Southwest Institute of Applied Magnetism, was established in 1967 when it relocated from Beijing to Mianyang, Sichuan. Over the years, due to adjustments in national administrative oversight, it has successively been affiliated with the Ministry of Electronic Industry, the Ministry of Mechanical and Electronic Industries, the Ministry of Electronic Industry, and finally the Ministry of Information Industry. Today, it operates as a second-level member unit under China Electronics Technology Group Corporation Ltd. Institute 9 specializes primarily in the research, development, production, and application of magnetic functional materials and specialized components, as well as conducting cutting-edge studies in applied magnetism. It stands as the sole comprehensive scientific research institution dedicated to applied magnetism in China. Guided consistently by technological innovation, the institute has developed a robust industrial portfolio centered around magnetic materials, magnetic components, and magnetic assemblies. Its products span a wide range of sectors, including civilian communications, consumer electronics, the emerging low-altitude economy, and even nuclear medicine applications. Recognized as one of China’s Top 50 leading electronic materials companies and among the top ten specialized players in the magnetic industry, Institute 9 has also earned recognition as an Outstanding Contribution Unit by the China Electronic Materials Industry Association. Notably, its subsidiary, Xici Technology, has been selected as a national-level "Little Giant" enterprise specializing in niche, sophisticated, and innovative technologies, underscoring the company’s remarkable growth trajectory and strong future potential. Moreover, Institute 9 fulfills critical roles as the National Supervision and Testing Center for Magnetic Products in China’s Electronic Industry, a key player in formulating industry standards for major magnetic products, and a hub for academic research, technical consulting, and service provision. It serves as the chairman and secretariat unit of the Magnetic Materials Branch within the China Electronic Materials Industry Association, as well as the vice-chairman unit of the Magnetic Materials and Devices Branch under the China Electronic Component Industry Association. Additionally, it holds a prominent position as a vice-chairman committee member of the China Electronics Society’s Applied Magnetism Society, while also serving as the domestic technical representative for IEC/TC51 at the International Electrotechnical Commission. Furthermore, Institute 9 oversees the secretariat of the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Magnetic Components and Ferrite Materials, and it is the publisher of the esteemed journal *Magnetic Materials and Devices*.
