Aerospace Research Institute No. 508

The Beijing Institute of Space Mechanics and Electrical Engineering, established on August 21, 1958, is affiliated with the China Academy of Space Technology. It is one of China’s earliest institutions dedicated to space technology research and remains the country’s sole organization specializing in spacecraft recovery and landing technologies. The institute integrates research and development, design, production, and testing under one roof, with core expertise spanning spacecraft recovery and landing systems, space-based optical remote sensing, pyrotechnic devices, composite material molding, and space laser detection technologies. It has undertaken critical national missions, including the recovery systems for the Shenzhou series spacecraft and various satellite remote-sensing payloads. Notably, the spaceborne optical sensors developed by the institute now account for more than 80% of all operational equipment currently in orbit across China. Since its inception in 1959 with the development of the T-7M sounding rocket, the institute achieved China’s first successful spacecraft recovery in 1960 and completed the development of the nation’s first recoverable satellite system in 1975, making China the third country globally to master satellite recovery technology. In 1992, the institute took on the pivotal task of developing the recovery systems for the Shenzhou series spacecraft, ultimately achieving a 100% success rate in recovering manned spacecraft. Building on its pioneering work, the institute has since expanded its technological reach into emerging fields such as unmanned aerial vehicle recovery and deep-space exploration landing tests. By 2025, it had established a Science and Technology Association aimed at fostering innovation and strengthening the institution’s R&D ecosystem. Through relentless pursuit of cutting-edge advancements, the institute has cultivated significant technical strengths in areas like composite material molding and LiDAR technology, earning three National Special Awards for Scientific and Technological Progress over the years.
