Institute of Science and Technology 203

The China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation's 203rd Institute of the Second Academy (also known as the Beijing Institute of Radio Metrology and Testing), was established on December 5, 1957. As a defense technology foundation institute, 203 focuses primarily on metrology and testing technologies, with traceability research at its core. The institute builds its strengths around four key pillars: metrological calibration technology, frequency control technology, automated testing technology, and comprehensive support systems. 203 also serves as the Management Office for Metrology Research Projects within China's Defense Science, Technology, and Industry; it is home to a Key Laboratory specializing in metrological calibration techniques; it operates as the Aerospace Electromagnetic Compatibility Testing Center; it hosts the Engineering Research Center for Integrated Support Technologies of Weapon Systems under the Second Academy of CASIC; it acts as the metrology institution accredited by the China-U.S. Committee for Quality Certification of Electronic Components; it is certified under the national ISO 9001 standard for defense industries; and it holds accreditation as a laboratory qualified for defense-sector testing, calibration, and metrology services. Additionally, 203 is designated as the official supplier of crystal components specifically tailored for aerospace products, equipped with a standardized production line that meets industry standards. The institute also holds the position of Chairperson for the Metrology and Testing Professional Committee of the Chinese Astronautical Society. At the heart of its mission, 203 conducts cutting-edge research in metrology and testing technologies—spanning fields such as microwave, radio, electromagnetic compatibility, time and frequency, and electrical measurements—while ensuring precise value transfer across these domains. Furthermore, the institute is deeply involved in developing advanced equipment like crystal components, frequency synthesizers, and atomic clocks. With a strong focus on innovation and R&D, 203 is dedicated to driving technological advancements in areas critical to urban safety, including smart solutions for scenarios such as safe production, gas monitoring, and pipeline inspection. To date, the institute has successfully developed several groundbreaking products, including the Integrated Safety Production Device and the Gas Construction Site Safety Tree—a testament to its commitment to delivering innovative, reliable, and intelligent solutions for industrial and public safety applications.
